My humble suspicion of the taint of selfish impulse keeps alive in me the need for redemption. I shall humbly accept that my motives are not fully transparent to me because I am not a pure spirit, but a fallen human being in need of purification. I shall be satisfied with a peaceful pondering of my intentions within the limits of reason and possibility. The rest I leave to God in surrender.-- Adrian van Kaam, 1968
